Our Programs
Bridge To Recovery and Opportunity House are our two programs that provide individual and group skill building activities designed to improve the ability to interact and function in the community. Recovery is a process in which individuals with severe mental illness are encouraged to take control of their lives, set goals, take advantage of opportunities and return to living, learning, working and socializing activities of their choosing.
Bridgehaven also has Adult Day Training, designed to treat persons with co-occurring psychiatric and intellectual disabilities. This program combines person centered interventions for adults with an intellectual disability with a high quality community based psychiatric rehabilitation and recovery program. By addressing both disabilities, we assist members in learning skills to not only live, work and socialize in their chosen environment, but to thrive there as well.
Members and Opportunities
In 2007-08, 506 Bridgehaven members (clients) came here with a variety of diagnoses, including Schizophrenia (27%), Schizoaffective Disorder (22%), Depression (17%), Bipolar Disorder (Manic-Depressive) (24%), PTSD (2%), and Psychotic or other disorders (8%). Bridgehaven members may attend as often as six days per week.
Over a seven-year period, members have experienced an average 83% reduction in hospitalizations for psychiatric symptoms. See Outcomes for more information on program effectiveness.

SUCCESS! A Smoking Cessation Program
Bridgehaven has received a generous grant from the American Legacy Foundation to implement a comprehensive and innovative smoking cessation program designed especially for the mental health consumer. This grant will enable us to develop a curriculum and approach that can be replicated in other mental health settings as well. Our research revealed that while persons with severe mental illness comprise only 7% of the population, they represent over 40% of the tobacco market. The program we have proposed to American Legacy will address tobacco dependence from a physical, psychological and cultural level, and will meet the unique needs of the person struggling with mental illness. We will begin taking referrals for the program immediately; and for the smoking cessation program we can accept participants without a payor source. Reach of Louisville is our partner and will be conducting program evaluations.
Peer Support Specialists
Nealia Harper and Phillip Winchell joined the Bridgehaven staff this fall as part time Certified Peer Support Specialists. The PSS is a consumer who has completed a training program offered by the Kentucky Department of Mental Health and passed an examination to obtain the Certification. Peer support is a new exciting concept in mental health settings, and evidence shows that peer support enhances the psychiatric rehab program in positive ways. The PSS is an employee who assists the professional in leading clinical program activities and talking one-on-one with members. Their effectiveness lies in their credibility since they too have gone through the process of recovery from mental illness and have a unique understanding of the challenges and rewards of treatment which they are willing to share with the members. Bridgehaven was able to implement Peer Support services through a targeted one-time $5,000 investment from Metro United Way.
